The Women's Health, Wisdom, and... WINE! podcast is a weekly conversation with practitioners, providers, patients & healers about complex reproductive medicine & women's health challenges, the value of an integrative approach to these challenges, many of the women's health topics you're already thinking about & uncomfortable talking about & my personal favorite... WINE!

Egg freezing, or mature oocyte cryopreservation, is a method used to preserve a woman's ability to get pregnant in the future. Eggs harvested from your ovaries are frozen unfertilized and stored for later use. A frozen egg can be thawed, combined with sperm in a lab and implanted in your uterus (in vitro fertilization).

Egg freezing can be beneficial for a number of reasons for women wishing to preserve their fertility for the future including:

  • Women who want or need to delay childbearing in order to pursue educational, career or other personal goals
  • Women diagnosed with cancer
  • Women with objections to storing frozen embryos for religious and/or moral reasons
  • Women with a family history of early menopause
  • Other medical reasons: Autoimmune diseases, fertility-reducing medications, endometriosis, ovary removal, premature ovarian failure/insufficiency, age-related fertility challenges, and gender transition surgery

Modern fertility advances have given patients more options to preserve their fertility. At one time, freezing embryos was the best way to safeguard future family plans. However, thanks to a fast freezing process called vitrification, egg freezing can lead to good success rates, giving patients more choices with their fertility planning. Ovarian tissue cryopreservation also continues to show promise as another avenue for fertility preservation.
